“Turnaround” – The Story of the 2002 Winter Olympics

Whilst driving from Salt Lake City to Park City in order to undertake the case study in relation to our Cairngorm Visioning exercise, I heard a radio interview with the Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, about his book on the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 (including venues in Park City). In the interview Romney outlined his approach to turning the organisation around as being based on the classic business review model: Anatomy of the Crisis, Strategic Audit, Team Building, Developing the Budget, Action Planning and Implementation.

His book, published in 2004 by Regnery Publishing of Washington DC (ISBN 0-89526-084-0) is an insightful and inspirational read. It should certain be essential reading for anyone involved in event planning and in developing brands. Romney describes the detailed challenges and how the Organising Committee overcame them in an easy-to-read style showing how a “big mess became a big success”. A thoroughly good read …
